Soul urge number: calculation, meanings and examples

Your soul urge number is the reduced sum of the vowels in your full birth name, and in numerology it describes what you want most deep down — the motivation underneath your choices. It is also called the heart's desire number. Where the expression number describes what you are good at, the soul urge describes what actually satisfies you, and the two do not always match. It is calculated with the Pythagorean letter chart, keeping 11, 22 and 33 as master numbers.

What the soul urge number describes

Numerology splits your birth name into layers. All the letters together give the expression number, your toolkit. The consonants give the personality number, the outer layer other people meet first. The vowels give the soul urge number, the inner layer — the things you want even when nobody is watching.

The idea behind using vowels is old and partly poetic: vowels are the sounds you make with an open throat, the breath of a word. Numerologists read them as the most private part of the name. Whatever you make of the reasoning, the result is a useful question to ask yourself: what would I choose if nothing else mattered.

The soul urge tends to show up in what drains you and what restores you. A soul urge 2 often feels empty after long stretches of solo work, however successful. A soul urge 5 often feels trapped by a stable routine, even a comfortable one. Those reactions are the number at work.

It also explains why two people with the same job and the same skills can feel completely differently about it. One is fed by the work itself, the other only by what it makes possible. The soul urge is the number numerologists reach for when they want to describe that difference, and it is often the number people recognise most strongly once they see it written down.

How to calculate it, step by step

Write out your full birth name exactly as it appears on your birth certificate. Underline the vowels: A, E, I, O and U. Convert each vowel with the Pythagorean chart — A is 1, E is 5, I is 9, O is 6, U is 3. Y, when used as a vowel, is 7.

Add the vowels in each name separately and reduce each name to a single digit, keeping 11, 22 and 33 if a name lands on one. Then add the results for each name together and reduce again, again keeping master numbers.

Some numerologists simply add all the vowels in the whole name at once and reduce the grand total. Most of the time both methods give the same answer, but the name-by-name method lets master numbers surface inside individual names, which is why it is the more common standard.

Use the full birth name, including middle names, and ignore titles, initials and suffixes such as Jr. A married or chosen name can be calculated separately, but numerologists read it as a later layer rather than the original heart's desire. If you have a very long name, write the vowels and their values in a row underneath each name before adding — it is the easiest way to avoid skipping one.

Worked examples

Elena Rose Martin. In ELENA, the vowels are E, E and A: 5 + 5 + 1 = 11, a master number, so it stays 11. In ROSE, the vowels are O and E: 6 + 5 = 11, kept as 11. In MARTIN, the vowels are A and I: 1 + 9 = 10, which reduces to 1. Adding them: 11 + 11 + 1 = 23, and 2 + 3 = 5. Her soul urge number is 5.

Check it with the whole-name method: all the vowels together are 11 + 11 + 10 = 32, and 3 + 2 = 5. Same answer. A soul urge 5 suggests someone who, underneath a careful and analytical expression number of 7, wants freedom, variety and new experience.

David James Cooper. DAVID has A and I: 1 + 9 = 10, which reduces to 1. JAMES has A and E: 1 + 5 = 6. COOPER has O, O and E: 6 + 6 + 5 = 17, which reduces to 8. Then 1 + 6 + 8 = 15, and 1 + 5 = 6. His soul urge is 6 — a deep wish to care for people and to feel responsible for something that matters.

Notice that neither example produced a master number at the end, even though Elena's name contains two of them along the way. Master numbers inside a single name are still worth noting: numerologists read them as a strong undercurrent, so Elena's double 11 suggests an intuitive, idealistic streak running beneath her restless 5.

When Y counts as a vowel

Y is the one letter that changes category. The common rule is that Y counts as a vowel when it makes a vowel sound and there is no other vowel in that syllable — as in Lynn, Bryce or the final Y in Emily. It counts as a consonant when it sits next to a vowel and sounds like a consonant, as in Yolanda or Maya.

When Y is treated as a vowel it carries the value 7, so it can shift your soul urge noticeably. If you are unsure, calculate it both ways. Many people find that one of the two results reads as clearly more accurate to them, and that recognition is part of the exercise.

Whatever you decide for the soul urge, treat Y the opposite way for the personality number, so the two still add up to your expression number.

What each soul urge number suggests

1 wants independence and the freedom to lead its own life. 2 wants closeness, peace and a partner to share things with. 3 wants to express itself and be heard — through art, talk or humour. 4 wants security, order and the satisfaction of a job done properly. 5 wants freedom, change and experience.

6 wants a home, a family or a community to look after, and to be needed. 7 wants understanding and time alone to think. 8 wants achievement, recognition and control over its own resources. 9 wants to make a wider difference and often feels pulled towards causes larger than itself.

11 wants to inspire and to follow its intuition, often feeling things more intensely than people around it. 22 wants to build something lasting on a large scale. 33 wants to heal, teach and give, sometimes at its own expense. As always, these are tendencies to reflect on, not instructions.

Using it for decisions and relationships

The soul urge is most useful when something looks right but feels wrong. If a job fits your expression number perfectly and still leaves you flat, compare it with your soul urge. An expression 8 with a soul urge 9 might run a business brilliantly and still need that business to help people before it feels worthwhile.

In relationships, numerologists often compare soul urge numbers between partners, because they describe what each person needs to feel content. Two people with similar soul urges usually understand each other's priorities quickly. Very different ones — a 4 who wants stability and a 5 who wants change — can work well too, but tend to need more explicit conversations.

Use it as a prompt rather than a rule. The question it asks — what do I actually want here — is worth asking whatever number you get.

Common questions

How do you find your soul urge number?

Take the vowels in your full birth name, convert them with the Pythagorean chart (A=1, E=5, I=9, O=6, U=3, vowel Y=7), reduce each name to one digit, add those and reduce again, keeping 11, 22 and 33.

Is the soul urge number the same as the heart's desire number?

Yes. Soul urge and heart's desire are two names for the same number, calculated from the vowels of the full birth name.

Does Y count as a vowel in numerology?

Y counts as a vowel when it makes a vowel sound and there is no other vowel in the syllable, as in Lynn or Emily. It counts as a consonant in names like Yolanda or Maya.

What is the rarest soul urge number?

The master numbers are the least common, especially 22 and 33, because they require the vowel totals to land on those exact sums before reducing.

What is the difference between soul urge and expression number?

The expression number uses every letter of the birth name and describes your talents. The soul urge uses only the vowels and describes what you want and what satisfies you.
